Free internet service offered to Shawnee schools families

Vyve Broadband has announced it will provide free Internet access to select Shawnee Public Schools students in an effort to help with e-learning school support.

Vyve will provide, free of charge for 60 days, their 25/3 Internet package to families who have students in Shawnee Public Schools and who qualify for the free lunch program in the Vyve serviceable area. The offer is only available for families who do not currently have Internet service.

To register for the Vyve service, a parent or guardian must contact SPS at (405) 273-0653 or internet@shawnee.k12.ok.us with this information:

• Parent/guardian name
• Student name(s)
• Address
• Phone number
• Type of device that will be connected to the Internet

The registration deadline is April 10.

I'll be putting some mini-lessons onto the blog for your third grader beginning Monday.  Please check back for some fun learning activities beginning then.

Class plays new spelling game -- and loves it

We had a very busy day today.  We also had extra children, as Mrs. White was sick and there were no subs.  

We played our spelling game that requires a lot of thinking and movement. They cannot wait until we play it again.  There were paper plates placed all over the room.  And on each was a letter of the alphabet.  Under each plate was an activity for them to do if they were at that letter.  They had to go to each letter of each of their spelling words and do the activities.  There were smiles all over!

We read a book, Freckle Juice. 

We also did some March art, as well as an extra recess.  Extra recess is rare, so they enjoyed that.

As you now know, we will not have school tomorrow so that a cleaning crew can come in and do some deep cleaning.  We have been using wet wipes on our desk regularly, but they want to do even more.

Third graders now learning about prepositions

We had another great day today.  Even with spring break coming up, Mrs. Christian's Crystals are trying hard to follow school procedures.

We started with a fractions review.  

We read silently, as well as continued working on our March Challenge.  The challenge has been good for them because they are working at their individual pace.  It is also helping them with self-discipline because they are doing it on their own.

We also introduced prepositions today.  We used four words (over, under, through, between) to write a sentence and to illustrate to show understanding of the prepositions.  We will work more with them so that they see how they are used.  Then we will define preposition.  Using words and figuring out how they are used by experience, helps them to retain the definitions/meanings.

We went to computers for some Istation math practice.  We also reviewed subtracting across zeroes.  This is a difficult skill for third graders, so we will be revisiting it many times.  

We also did some spelling practice with our individual spelling words.
