Third graders read nonfiction passage about Oklahoma sports hero Mickey Mantle

We had a very busy day today.  We didn't have TIES since we had our monthly TIES meetings.

We started by continuing to work on our Oklahoma research.

In reading we read a nonfiction passage about Mickey Mantle.  We also did some word games with a Christmas theme.

We did a contraction puzzle.  They had to cut out and glue the matching contractions to the words they represented.

In math we started another hidden picture.  These take so much thinking and logic!

We worked with our spelling words in different ways today.  We had to write a sentence correctly that I gave to them.  It wasn't written incorrectly.

They have one page of math homework tonight.  It is in the books I bought for them.

Third graders learn about contractions

We had a very busy day today.  We started with some silent reading.

We listened to chapters 5 and 6 from Sarah, Plain an Tall.  We also answered questions over just those chapters.

I gave them a page with a picture from the story and they had to write about what was happening and who was in the picture.

In math added money, but had to know different shapes in order to figure out the problems.  They had to do some extra thinking today.

In spelling we added apostrophes to contractions.  We discussed how the apostrophes take the place of letters that are omitted.  For example, do not is don't as a contraction.  The apostrophe takes the place of the o in not, as it is left out.

In science we took core samples from our sandwiches.

In social studies we started our Oklahoma research.

It is an awesome, but rare, day when we can squeeze in science AND social studies.

I was out today, but I'll be back tomorrow.  Tell my third graders I can't wait to see them.

Third graders are creating tall tale characters

We had a great Monday today!

We started with creating a tall tale character.  Before drawing a character, they had to finish descriptions such as "My character is as tall as a _____________."  Then they drew the characters to match the descriptions.

In reading we reviewed chapters 1-4.  We also worked with figurative language and added examples from the book to our notebooks.

In math  we came up with multiple ways to make a dollar, compared different amounts of coins, and took a quiz over what we have been working on for the past few days.

Spelling words came home today. They are contractions this week.

If your child forgot his or her Thunder Reading challenge, tomorrow is the last day to bring them.
