Varied learning activities fill busy day for third grade

We had a wonderful day today!  

We started by doing a comprehension check up about the Cowboy Hall of Fame.  It was a very interesting read.  The class enjoyed it because it was about something close to home.  

In reading we continued working with genres, and read a play today.  We discussed the differences in a book or story to a play. Of course, reading a play also brought up discussions about not reading the actions that are written in italics and in parenthesis, as well as the names that show who reads what.  We had on our thinking caps this morning for that one!

We continued our figurative language review, as well.  We worked with onomatopoeia today. We found examples, wrote examples, and illustrated one.

We made another multiplication fact poster, showing multiple strategies.  Each group was given a different fact.  

In science we finished our emoji activity.  This was interesting, as well.

Class studies fables, multiplication strategies, erosion

We had another great day!  

Today we were able to go to the computer lab and do our Math ISIP. Many met or surpassed their goals for January.

We also continued with genres today, focusing on fables. We extended our lesson to review compound words, after discovering several in the fables we read today.  They are bringing those books home again to read a couple more. 

They are enjoying the fables.

We also made multiplication strategy posters in groups today. We used the ones we made in December as guides for new problems.  

We discussed rocks and erosion today for science.

Third graders study genre

We had such a productive day. We are working on genre in reading.  We first put the types in our notebooks.  Then we matched the stories/descriptions to each.  After that we had a scavenger hunt using the books in our room to find an example of each.  We even found some in our large reading book.  We discovered how some overlap and can be more than one genre.  This is a difficult concept for third graders.  They want a definite right/wrong answer.  This sparked great discussions.

We put our pictures on snowflakes.  I love doing this because children, just like so snowflakes, are unique individuals.  

We worked on a graph in math.  If they didn't finish, they brought it home.

Our reading assignment tonight is 2 fables from the book I sent home.

Third graders return to a busy day of reading, writing, math, and research

It was great to see everyone again today!  I missed their smiling faces.  Some were a bit tired, as I was.  I almost had my days and nights mixed up!  I tend to stay up late and sleep in when I am not at work.

We started by getting our hands warmed up.  We used Play-Doh to make things and get our hands used to working again.

We did a writing lesson today.  I modeled it, before each student came up with words that defined who they are.  For example, some of my words were "God-Loving, Mom, Teacher", etc.  Then we traced a person pattern.  We put the words in order from most to least.  We drew lines and wrote each word in a line.  I will send a picture of our bulletin board when they are up.

There is no reading assignment tonight, but their January book did come home with them.  Pie by Sarah Weeks is for them to keep.  It is a chapter book, so if they aren't ready to read it alone, you can read it to them a little each day, or save it for them to do on their own.

We also took our ISIP test for January.  Most improved, and I was so proud of them.  We will do the math test on Thursday.  These are done on computers.  We are looking for growth and personal best, not perfection.

In math we reviewed, angles, rays, etc. We used pretzels and marshmallows.  We added to our notebooks and did a practice page.  The practice page required using our notebooks.  It was a great lesson in referring to something to find answers.  Because, as I always say, "Third grade is when we go from learning to read to reading to learn." 

We glued our pictures onto a snowflake.  I love doing this, as just as snowflakes are unique, so are my crystals!
