Students continue patterning study and literature study using Anansi

We had another successful day in third grade! There were a few children who I sent notes home with today, as I don’t think they had given the corrected notes with dates and times for conferences to you. Please ask your child if he or she has a round note for you. It has a peacock on it.

We continued with patterning by using in and out boxes. I first demonstrated this by giving a student a certain number of markers. Then he would go to the hall and get the number I told him. For example, I might give a student 3 markers. I would tell them to grab 2 more. We would do this several times. The hall represented an in and out machine. The students then had to figure out the pattern. In this instance it was to add 2 to whatever the student already had. But some were subtraction rules. They seemed to do well on these. We also wrote numbers starting with 101 through 200. We are trying to practice writing letters and numbers.

We continues our multiple skills using the Anansi theme. We finished our packet, and covered homonyms, long and short vowel sounds, and choosing the correct word (comprehension). We also had some time to read an Anansi book.

We made a simple spider book today. Tomorrow we will work on one that is a little more complicated.

We will also take the Istation test tomorrow.

Class uses children's literature story to learn important language arts skills

I hope everyone had a great weekend. We certainly had a marvelous Monday in class today.

If you forgot your conference dates/times, you may call or text. Miss Charity has a copy of our schedule in the office, as well. The note that was given to us to send home, had the correct days, but the wrong dates. The reminder I sent home has the correct day and time.

We worked more with subtracting across zero today. We also worked with patterns. We used a different approach today. It was enjoyed by all.

We read about Anansi today. He is a mischievous spider who they have told tales about in west Africa forever. We also took this chance to revisit nouns, adjectives, and verbs. We also discussed real/not real. This also gave us a chance to discuss personification (where things that are not human are given traits that are; ex. The tree’s branches tickled the sky.) In reading, we cover so many skills on a daily basis, it is difficult to list them all.

We had some silent reading time, as well.

Students welcome 'grands,' take spelling tests, work on subtraction across zeros

We had a great day today! It was so nice to see all of the "grand" people at school today. It made my heart happy!

We took our spelling tests today. We also worked on Istation in reading and math.

We did subtraction across zero on our desks. This takes a lot of practice.

We finished our letters to the dragon character from our story. They turned out nicely.

Conference reminder notes came home today!

Another great day of learning and fun in third grade

We had another great day in third today. 

We continued with patterning, but this time with a number line. We also had to figure out the first number on a couple. So we had to subtract to get the ones before others. 

We worked on our letters to the dragon. If they didn’t finish their rough draft, they were supposed to bring it home. Tomorrow, I will conference with each and work on corrections. 

We read the story again, then silently. I had them highlight words they had trouble with. Then they wrote those words on index cards so they may practice at home.

Students work hard with math patterns

We had another busy, but great day!

We had people from “Community Renewal” at our school morning meeting.

We also continued our work with patterns in math. Today we used pictures again. But it was a little harder than what we have done so far. We had to really put on our thinking caps to solve some of the given problems. Not only were the patterns more difficult, but the questions were, as well.  For example, they would have to draw the next two items in a pattern that was on paper. Then they were given a question that asked what picture would be in the 17th place.

We worked with vocabulary and our spelling words today. We were allowed to read silently, as well. I also handed out the Braum’s Buddy cards. They will earn stickers, and for every six, there is a certificate for something free from Braum’s. Each student has a reading log. If he/she reads at home, please sign and write the number of minutes. When the log is filled, I will total the minutes. For every 30 minutes, he/she will receive a sticker for the Braum’s card.

Conference notes also came home today. Please keep the top part, and return the bottom.

The book fair starts tomorrow. Grandparents/Special Person day is Friday.

Students enjoy fourth grade music program

We had a wonderful day in third grade today!  We had another student finish addition in Xtramath. They may work on this at home. It is free. 

We enjoyed the fourth grade music program today. They did an amazing job. Mrs. Wilson is so good at getting children to step outside of their comfort zone, and participate!  

We did some subtraction practice, as well as working on our patterns. We used only numbers in our patterns today. We will continue to do some subtraction practice, as it is still giving some a little trouble. But it won’t be more than 5 problems a day, so that we can cover our other skills.

We read silently today, as well as listened to a story online. We also wrote down what we would say to the dragon in our story. In our story the dragon and a human student are pen pals.

Tomorrow is PE, so please make sure they wear appropriate shoes.

Two students complete addition in Xtramath.

We had the firemen clowns for a fire safety assembly yesterday.  As always, the students enjoyed this!

We also worked on patterns. We did this with shapes and numbers.

We worked in small groups, according to which skill a student needed.

Congratulations to Chelsea! She is the first to complete the addition in Xtramath! She was rewarded with a book coin and a dollar.
