Third graders learn about adjectives and adverbs

We had a great day today. Remember some of you have conferences tomorrow. Some are Thursday. Feel free to message me if you have forgotten your time.

We did some multiplication practice today.

We also did some oral, silent, and choral reading of the same passage. I am trying to help them realize the importance of re-reading something. It helps so much. There was also some vocabulary practice and comprehension practice thrown in there.

We read a story that told a little about how Valentine's Day got started in America.

We worked on identifying nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. I told them an adjective is a describing word and answers the questions: What kind? Which one? How many? While adverbs modify a verb or another adverb, often end in "ly", and answer the questions: How? When? Where? If they were confused, I would use it in a sentence and then ask a question if it was a word that answered one. For example: The brown cow mooed loudly. What kind of cow? Brown, so it is an adjective. OR How did the cow moo? Loudly, so it is an adverb. Trust me, I had to relearn this stuff, having not seen it in years!

Tomorrow is our Valentine's Day party. Store bought items may be sent. Several had already asked.

Have a great day!

More on shapes, perimeter, vocabulary, tense -- and a compliment chart

We had a Fabulous Friday.

We worked more with shapes, 2-D and 3-D. We learned why they have their names. We added to our notebooks. We also did a practice page to see if we understand.

We did a check-up on perimeter, by playing I Have, Who Has. These task cards had a lot of learning involved. They first had to figure out the perimeter of their given shapes. Then they had to read the words. They also had to speak in their best speaker voice.

We worked more with our vocabulary from this week. We also worked with verbs, past and present tense.

We also wrote about a penguin we drew and named.

We filled another compliment chart and were rewarded with some free IPad time.

Greek prefixes in third grade? Students learn about structure of language

We had another great day today. One thing was that we got to see Mrs. Wilson work her magic with the first graders this afternoon. Their program was adorable.

We took our math ISIP this morning. Many did well. Remember, we are looking for growth, not perfection.

We also worked with our vocabulary for the week, as well as some Greek prefixes. (uni, bi, tri)

We did an activity that had us checking to make sure we remembered what synonyms are. They had to glue the synonyms together in a row.

We also did a comprehension check-up. These are timed, and they have to choose the correct word from three choices. This helps in comprehension, as well as fluency.

Parent-Teacher conferences are next week. I have sent home times with everyone. Please let me know if you are unable to come during your scheduled time.

Third graders learn to distinguish 2-D and 3-D shapes

Another great day was had by all. We covered a lot today.

We worked more with our shapes, and distinguished between 2-D and 3-D shapes. We added some great information to our notebooks so that we will have it to reference when needed.

Some are moving right along on the Glad Minutes. Keep practicing those flash cards.

Some took their ISIP reading test again. When reminded how important it is to take their time, most do their best. But yesterday some got in a hurry.

We watched a couple of 5 minute Mystery Science videos today. One was on the heart and the other was about things that glow. They had to make posters with pictures and information about one of the videos. (Their choice)

We read and answered questions, after a discussion.

Notes about parent-teacher conferences came home. Please let me know as soon as possible if you need another day or time. If next Tuesday or Thursday doesn't work for you, I will meet any day after school.

Unknown computer issues cause blog to be late

For some reason my blog update wouldn’t load yesterday. Even today, I had to send it by phone to someone else to post on the blog.  I'll try to seek help from our computer professionals to get things worked out on Wednesday.

But we had a great day today. We explored 2-D shapes and made pictures using the different shapes. We will work more with them tomorrow.

We took our reading ISIP tests today. I am having some retake theirs tomorrow, as some didn’t do their personal best.

We added our words to our spelling practice site.

We also did some silent reading.

We also made a chart as a class that included headings such as article adjectives, adjectives, subject nouns, verbs, when, and where. We then filled in each column as a class. When finished they had to write a “super sentence.”  I read a basic, but correct, sentence. “The student spoke.” I asked if they would like reading sentences written like that. They also had to draw a picture that matched their sentences.

Have a great evening!

All students return for full day of learning

We had an excellent day back, and to make it even better, we had everyone here!

We revisited angles and added more information to our notebooks. We had to fill in the blanks to make the statements correct. We also worked with multiplication. We discussed multiplying by fives.

We worked on our cursive today with the letter c, both upper and lower case.

We read our story again. We also worked with “oi” and “oy.”

I hope everyone has a great weekend!
