Third graders read short story, work with rhyming words and fractions, perform science experiment

We had another successful day in third grade.  We started with a seasonal hidden picture.

We read a short story and answered questions over it. We also worked with rhyming words, ans well as sorting our spelling words.

Using our spelling words, we also played Sparkle.

In math we worked more with fractions and added to our notebooks.

In science we took three candy hearts and put them in water, after writing our predictions.  We will check them in the morning.

Book orders came home.  They are due next Wednesday, February 6.

Students work on picture book exploration

We were busy learning once again!  We started with some silent reading.

We did a picture book exploration.  This is good for all levels of readers.  For the ones that may  need a little extra boost, it gives them the freedom to read at a lower level without fear of others thinking they are having trouble. For the ones on level or above, it gives them the permission to read some great stories that they may not read otherwise. They had to write the title of each book read, and rate it with a happy face, a so-so face, or a sad face, based upon their opinion of the book. We will be taking this information and graphing it later.

We also worked on a collection of skills using a trifold that goes along with our story for the week.

We assembled three pies using the fractions, 1/4, 1/6, and 1,8.

We also did a word search using our spelling words.

Class is enjoying its study of fractions

We had a very busy day today!  We started by writing our spelling words using our color chart.

We took a quiz over Cranberry Valentine.  We also did a book review over one of the books from the Sequoyah list that we have read as a class.

We worked with our vocabulary today, as well as reviewing prefixes.

In math we compared fractions and introduced equivalent fractions.  They seem to enjoy fractions.  I always had trouble with fractions as a student, but this group doesn't seem bothered by the least!

In science, we took an open book quiz over the states of matter book we read.  We revisited the three states of matter before going on in the Fossils to Fuel curriculum.

Don't forget that Thunder Reading challenge sheets are due, Friday, February 1!
