Third graders talk about what makes a great reader

We have our third day out of the way. We are getting into our routine and remembering school procedures.

If anyone would like to donate snacks we would appreciate it. They have to be individually packaged, and store-bought. They are a little hungry during the day, and it is hard to think when you are hungry. We have an apple allergy in our classroom, so that includes apple sauce.

Today in reading we went over what makes a great reader. We decided that great readers make predictions, ask questions, focus (in the zone), make connections, think about the characters, visualize, and infer. We read a book, then did an activity that discussed the beginning, middle, and end. We also brought home a book to read. There is a note for you to sign after your child has read it to you. If your child is still struggling, then you may choose to read it to him, or take turns reading with him.

They started earning (play) quarters today. There are different items they may save for.

We put together our daily folders and will continue to add to those. Look for them each day. When you are through, make sure your child puts it back in his backpack.

We also did a subtraction check-up. We didn't get to finish the whole lesson, as it was a two-parter. So we did just the solving today, tomorrow, we will continue and finish.

We will be doing some individualized testing this week to see who needs what in instruction.

Have a great evening with your family.
