Third graders make scarecrow glyph

We had a great day today!  We started by making a scarecrow glyph.  Again, a glyph is where the child has to read the choices and pick the one that works for him or her.

In reading we worked with finding the main idea and comparing/contrasting the two stories we read today.  They both dealt with national landmarks/monuments.  We also reviewed compound words and made some by working the math facts.

In math we practiced three digit addition by playing a game called "SCOOT."  Ask your child about this.

We measured our alligator that has been out of the water for a week. It lost 1 1/2 inches in length.

Fundraising envelopes due tomorrow if you forgot to send them today

If you didn't return your child's fundraising envelope today, be sure to do that tomorrow.

This was an abbreviated day for me -- I left early in the afternoon to go to another school district to do a workshop on science notebooking for teachers.

But we still had a full day of learning.  In the morning, we reviewed spelling words and introduced new spelling and vocabulary words.  We also wrote spelling words in alphabetical order.

In math, we practiced three-digit addition and subtraction.

Tonight, be sure your child reads the reading assignment, the story A Natural Beauty.

Third graders take spelling test, work on metaphors, do multi-digit addition

We  started with a number comparing practice page.

In reading we worked with vocabulary again.  We also took our weekly assessment. We also identified the different ways the long a sound was written in our spelling words.

We continued or work with metaphors today.

We took our spelling test.

We worked with multi-digit addition.  We also practiced on the Chrome Books.

Have a great weekend!

Fundraisers are due Monday!

Third graders learn about similes and metaphors

We had another successful day in third grade today!

We worked with cause and effect to start our reading off.  After discussing, defining, and adding information to our notebooks, we made cartoons.  They drew a cause-and-effect cartoon to add to their notebooks.  The example we first saw was a girl sticking a balloon with a pin.  The effect picture showed the balloon popping.

We also worked with similes and metaphors.  They both compare two things.  Similes use the words "as" and "like."  For example, "I am as happy as a lark!" I know you can think of several, and may not have even known what they were called.  "You're toast!" is a metaphor.  Notice that it compares two things in another way. Figurative language is so much fun!

In math we practiced addition after using the base ten blocks.  The children took turns making the given numbers.  Then we added and showed regrouping using the blocks.  Math is one of those subjects that can be shown and done in more than one way.  I use different approaches so that I can hopefully get across to all learners!

In social studies we worked with our maps in our newspaper.  I can't wait to finish the first one.  I want you to see how neat these are!

I sent home book orders.  They are due next Thursday.

Our secret word is "alliteration."  We discussed this word today!
