Class starts study of new author

We had a great start of a brand new week!  We got to change our fraction for all of us being at school and on time!  We have accomplished this 9 out of 32 days!

Some started with some silent reading, while others finished unfinished work.

We started an author study, using Kevin Henkes.  We read more than one of his books today.  This is a week long project.  Tonight's reading assignment is one of my favorites, Chrysanthemum.  We also went through the beginning, middle and end of the story, and discussed how the main character's emotions changed.  You can learn more about Kevin Henkes below:

Our spelling words are rocket, pocket, hold, told, often, grow, throne, so, sew, most, almost, both, coach, open, and also.  I didn't give the their list, as we ran out of time.  I will give them to them tomorrow.

We went to computers for math today.  We got on Istation for the biggest part of our time, then we went to Prodigy if we wanted.

We read more of our social studies paper and discussed state symbols.

Have a great week!

Students work on context clues

We had a fabulous Friday.

We revisited context clues using task cards.  Task cards have questions and answer choices on them.  The children walk around the room and write the answer to the given card on the correct box.  For example, the answer to #5 is written in box 5.

We also did a main idea sort.  They were given a list of words.  They had to put these words into three categories, and give a title to each list.

We took our spelling test.  We got a little bit of time for Istation today.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Students compare two nonfiction stories

We had a busy, busy day today.

Our college observer from ECU was here for the afternoon.  They love class visitors!

We compared our 2 nonfiction stories today, after reading Always Inventing.  This is a book about Thomas Alva Edison.  Your child should have brought it home to read aloud to you.  Then we took a quiz, but before we answered the questions, we found the text in the book that proved the answers.  Being able tot go back into a story to find information, is an important skill.

In math we made numbers by using the word forms or base ten models.  Then we compared them on our wipe-off manipulative.

We are almost through with our read aloud.  Please ask your child to tell you what they remember about our story so far.  Retelling is another great skill.

Have a great evening!
