A busy day of active learning for third graders

We had a busy Tuesday in third grade!

Please read the whole post, as at the end I am trying something.

We started by unscrambling letters to find the nickname for Oklahoma.  I was surprised they didn't already know that.  But when one child asked if it was "George,"I knew it wasn't obvious to them.

We read from our book, and tonight's reading assignment is the last chapter. they have enjoyed this book.  It has been one of my favorites!  I love that it shows how all people involved feel when someone is mistreated/made fun of.

We also read from our social studies folder.  There was page that was called "Wheel of Fortune."  They loved it.  We just added the vowels to find different native American tribes.

I worked with each spelling group according to their list.  I have three different groups.  Each child is in a group where he or she can be challenged, but not frustrated.  They can also feel some success with their list. We used different skills using our spelling words.

In math we started with a page that used our brains quite a bit!  If any of you have ever done logical puzzles or Sudoku, then you know how difficult it is to reason sometimes.  We did one puzzle together.  Then we read the hints on the second puzzle.  We finished the second one alone.  We had fun using all of our brain today!

We also worked with doubles in multiplication.  I pointed out that any number times two is like adding a number to itself.  For example, 2 X 7 is the same as 7 + 7.  We also discussed how numbers used in a multiplication problem (factors) could be in any order but still the answer will be the same!

There will be book orders and a note from Mrs. Wilson in tomorrow's folders, as well as other things.

Make sure your child is filling in his or her Thunder Reading Challenge calendar!

Have a great evening with your family!
