A message from the superintendent, Dr. April Grace

Dear Shawnee Families,

Today, Nov. 18, Shawnee Public Schools has begun the temporary transition from face-to-face learning to distance learning. Your students’ teachers and principals have sent information to all of you about what distance learning will look like for your student, but I want to give you some more details about what our plans are in the upcoming days.

Our nutrition services staff will continue to provide meals to children during distance learning. This Thursday, Nov. 19, our bus drivers will deliver two days’ worth of meals along bus routes. These routes will continue the week after Thanksgiving on Monday, Nov. 30; Wednesday, Dec. 2; and Friday, Dec. 4. (Meals for only one day will be delivered on Dec. 4.) These meals are for any child 18 years of age or younger. The meal delivery routes and times are available at our SPS Distance Learning Plan link on the district homepage, www.shawnee.k12.ok.us. We have also added information to help parents log in to Seesaw or Canvas at the same link on our website. If you cannot find the answer to your question, please reach out to your student’s teacher or school site for assistance.

Our plan is to continue distance learning Nov. 18-20 and Nov. 30-Dec. 4, and to return to face-to-face instruction Dec. 7. It is always extremely important that you wear face coverings in public, keep social distance as much as possible, monitor temperature daily, wash your hands frequently, sanitize routinely, and stay home when you are not feeling well. Thank you for your understanding as we take precautions for the safety of our students and staff.

Expectations for virtual learning: an open letter to parents from the third grade teachers

Parents:

We know that this time is very stressful for everyone. We came up with some expectations

that we will have that we hope will answer some questions you may have. Please never hesitate to reach out and ask if you have any questions or concerns.

Attendance:

To be counted as present, students will need to complete each days’ assigned SeeSaw activities by the end of the day.

Requirements:

The only assignments/activities that are required are the ones posted on SeeSaw. All other websites (ie. Prodigy, AR, iStation, etc.) will be optional. We would like for students to continue reading a book daily.

Grades:

We will be taking grades on SeeSaw assignments.

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding as we enter virtual learning!

We can do this!

Another busy day of learning for third graders

Today was busy, to say the least.  Your child is coming home with a device if you signed up for one.  Please help them to remember to take good care of them.  Also, do. not let anything magnetized get near them.

We finished spelling packets today.  And I will have this week's spelling words on spellingcity.com as soon as I get this posted.

We read silently, as well as took some AR tests.

We worked with lines and angles in math, as well as some review on missing numbers.

Also coming home today are folders that say "Computer Information." I have put everything you need for all of the sites your child needs.  Please note that Prodigy is optional.  It is good math practice, though.  I have asked them to do Xtramath four times between now and when we return on December 7. (Note: Anytime you want to open these sites, just check the icons in the column to the right -- they will always show on the blog page.)

They should have brought home their December book yesterday. The Snowy Day is for them to keep.

Please feel free to get in touch if you need anything!

Class starts new book from the favorite 'Cranberry' series

Well, as you know by now we are going to go virtual until December 7. This is a precaution since we will all be around friends and family members over the holidays.

We are much more prepared, and we are trying to make it as easy as possible for you and your family!

Today we read Cranberry Thanksgiving. It has some of the same characters in the cranberry book we read in October. They are enjoying this series.  They brought it home with a reading note today.  Please return them tomorrow.

We also started our discussion on figurative language, focusing on similes today.  We have been using/finding onomatopoeia for weeks now, and they love finding examples in the books we read.  Figurative language is much easier to understand when examples are found and used, before worrying about the definitions.

We did a subtraction review page in math.  Tomorrow we will start lines and angles by adding information to our math notebooks.

We also started our writing notebooks today.  And one of the activities they will be asked to do is to write about anything they want on November 18, 19, 20 and 30th.  They will also need to write in them on December 1, 2, 3, and 4th.

The third grade teachers have already planned for Wednesday through Thursday of this week.  We have assigned work in Seesaw by day.

We also made "We are Thankful" wheels today.

Your child was also allowed to check out a few library books.

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to email or call.
