Class studies author's purpose in writing

We had a great first day back after the break. It was good seeing everyone today.

We worked with author’s purpose today. Basically, there are three reasons something is written: to persuade, inform, or entertain. Today we read a couple of nonfiction books about insects and some of the students saiid they thought they were written to entertain the reader. I told them that while many enjoy reading nonfiction, it was written to inform. This caused a wonderful class discussion. It even led to a side discussion about fact and opinion. When we have these conversations, I know they are listening and learning!

We are working on word problems in math this week. We will start out with some simple ones, then move into more complex ones. We will also continue to revisit/review addition and subtraction.

The third grade program is scheduled for October 27th. I wanted to give you plenty of notice so that you could make arrangements, if needed.

Stay warm tonight!
