Today in third grade: vocabulary, wordsearches, numbers with lots of digits, silent reading

We had a fabulous Friday!  I think everyone was ready for the weekend, though.

We started with some number ordering practice.

In reading we took a vocabulary and skills test.

We did a wordsearch with our spelling words.  We also took our first test of the year.

In math we worked more with place value up to 10,000.  The numbers that had a 0 in one of the digits gave some of them trouble when writing the number in words or writing in standard form.

We had some silent reading time today.  We also wrote some of our favorites and tried to find a classmate that shared at least one of the items on our list.

Don't forget book orders are due next week.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Students begin work on their lexicons

We had another successful day in third grade.

We started with a DROPS math review for morning work.  We went over several of them together, because some struggled.

In reading we worked with our vocabulary words.  We also continued working with sentences and sentence fragments.  The biggest obstacle right now is determining if a sentence is a complete sentence or a sentence fragment.  Some are very easy to tell, but some challenge them.

We also did our first lexicon page.  A lexicon is basically each student's own dictionary. I choose a word that is somehow a part of our curriculum or our quotes for the week.  There are several steps that we must do.  Today we did the whole page together.  The first step is to write the word, then to step the word (write in syllables), then to write the correct pronunciation, etc.  I even mixed in a little math with it.  They seemed to enjoy this.

In math we worked more with place value and used the stamps to make given numbers.

Our music teacher is taking money for the students' recorders.  They are $3.  If you haven't sent your money, please do so when it is convenient.

Have a great day!

Students work on math with practice and games

We had a Wonderful Wednesday today!  We started with some counting by ones and tens practice.  The tens gave some of us some trouble, but we worked through it together.

In reading, we finished reading Flat Stanley silently.  We will go over it tomorrow as a class.  We also worked with rhyming using our spelling words.  Capitalization and punctuation (sentence endings) skills were also worked on.

In math we played "What is My Number?"  I thought of a number and they had to ask questions that can only be answered with a yes or a no.  When we started all they knew was that it was a 3 digit number.  Then questions such as, "Is it great than 100?" were asked.  Another one asked if it was an odd number.  This went well.  Although they had fun, they were learning and working those thinking skills......the higher-level ones!  Then we did a practice sheet on place value and sequence.

We have started AR tests.

There are no graded papers in today's folders, as my grade book isn't set up on my computer yet.  They will come and set that up for me.

Have a great evening!
