Third graders work hard on thinking cap challenge in math

It was great seeing everyone today.  We started with some silent reading.

In reading we did our one minute reads, where I listen to every child read.  This was the third time we read this given passage so a grade was taken today.  We also discussed the parts of a story that we worked on last week.

We wrote our vocabulary words in alphabetical order.

We did a thinking cap challenge in math.  We had to read clues and figure out the number.  It wasn't easy.  We will be writing our own this week.  It is good for them to do this, as it helps them figure out the riddles when given to them.  This is a very high-level thinking skill that we will continue to work on all year!

We had a third of another class in here this afternoon, as the teacher had to go to a meeting.   So we had assignment completion and extra time to read.

Note:  Folders will go home tomorrow.

Third graders learn to retell stories

We had a great, active day today!  We started with reading silently.

In reading we read our story in small groups and discussed them.  We had to retell the story in our own words. That took a lot of discussion.  Many wanted to copy sentences from the story.  I told them to write as they would retell it verbally.  We also talked about not mentioning every little thing that happened.  I tried to explain to them to only write about the highlights of the story.  I also told them the way to decide if it was an important part was to ask themselves if the story would be changed a lot or ruined if that part were left out.  Check out the following site to see why it is so important for children to learn to retell stories: https://www.redapplereading.com/blog/2013/09/the-importance-of-story-retelling/

We talked about quotations and how they are used.

In math, we worked more with our ordering of numbers.  We also had time to go to www.prodigygame.com/play for a few minutes.  This is a site they can get on at home.  It is all math!  Another great site is aplusmath.com.  Both are free.

In social studies, we discussed Labor Day.  Then we discussed different jobs.  We also did a sight recognition game using the different careers.

Have a great break with your family!

Students take STAR math test

I hope everyone had a great day! We did.

We started with a practice page that had us counting by ones, then twos.

In reading we worked with characters, setting, and plot.  We read Yoon and the Jade Bracelet.  We are making an organizer out of construction paper to show we understand each of these skills.

We had some silent reading time today.

We took the STAR math test today.

Remember  that our spelling test isn't until next Friday, and book orders are due tomorrow.
