A busy day of learning for third graders

Our third day was another success.  I am enjoying your children!

We started by doing a Play-Doh build.  We used toothpicks and Play-Doh to make anything we wanted.  I had several great structures.  Then we drew them in our science notebooks.

We also played an addition game today.  We rolled the dice, added the numbers together, and took that number of buttons.  At the end of ten minutes, the person with the most buttons won the game.  Then we compared the numbers on the board.  For example, in one group one child had 37 and the other had 44.  As a class we decided if 37 was less than, greater than, or equal to 44.  I wrote it on the board as 37<44.  We did this with each group's numbers.

Here are some photos of the children using math manipulatives in class.

We colored our owls for our "WE CARE" word this month, which is wisdom.  We talked about making wise choices, and how doing that keeps us out of trouble and makes us the best person we can be.

We finished our monsters today.  They turned out great!

Have a great evening with your family!

Third grade is underway with great learning exercises

Our second day was as amazing as yesterday!  I think it is going to be a great year!

We worked with syllables today.  I was pretty impressed.  Most had no trouble with them at all.

We also did a back-to-school word search.  These always bring a mixed set of responses.  Many just "love them."  Others dread them.  They are good exercises for them, though.

We started a new read aloud book.  We are reading The Doll People.  It has been a favorite of every third grade class I have ever had.  And out of my 35 years of teaching, 27 have been in third grade.

We painted monsters today.  These will have their names on them, and each day will be placed under the correct heading for what kind of lunch they will be having.

We explored centers, and I saw some great builds going on.

We took pictures today.  The sign said first day, but since I forgot to take them yesterday, we did them today.

Thank you for allowing me to work with your child this year!

Here's the new garden our class has adopted.  We'll be working on it during the year, and learning a lot of science in the process:

Third grade has a great first day

We had a great day in Mrs. Christian's Crystals' third grade!

First, it was great meeting those of you that were able to come to our "Meet the Teacher" night.

We started our day by going over some procedures and practicing them.  We also put away our supplies.  If you haven't sent them with your child yet, don't worry.

We looked at the flower bed that our class will be maintaining this year.  My husband got it started for us.  We will be growing some pansies from seed to add to it later on.  We are pretty excited about that!

We designed a t-shirt.  Some didn't get finished with theirs.  We will finish those tomorrow.

We read a book, Lulu and the Brontosaurus.  There are four books in this series.  Lulu is a great character.

We went over centers and STEM activities that may be used when they are through with work, but others are still working.  We also looked where certain books were located.  We had some time to play with those, as well.

Your child should have brought home his or her "Procedure Folders."  Please go over these with your child.  On the front page there is a place for your signature, as well as your child's.
