Young artists make ornaments for OKC trip

We had a great day today! We started by making our spelling words out of Play-Doh!

We summarized chapters 4-7 from our book.  They are getting so much better at recalling the main ideas, rather than the minor details.  At first, some wanted to try to retell stories almost word-for-word.  We also made our new vocabulary word cards.  Please go over these with your child.  It only takes a few minutes to see which ones give him or her trouble, if any.  Chapter 9 is tonight's reading assignment.

We made our ornaments today for our trip to Oklahoma City Monday.  When I told them we would be across from the Governor's mansion they became pretty excited!

We will have our spelling tests tomorrow!

Students begin working with money in math

We started with some small motor skills practice by drawing and coloring.

We did another word sort today, using the letters a,a,l,w,s and y.  They came up with a few words that didn't include all the letters, before being asked to make a word using them all.  I only had 2 groups that were able to do this.

Then we reviewed chapters 1-3 in our book.  We answered a few questions and made observations.  Then we listened to chapters 4-6.  Tonight's reading assignment is chapter 6.

In math we worked with money.   We identified the four coins used and the dollar.  We drew them in our math notebooks.  We also wrote their names, values, and how many of each were needed to equal a dollar.  Then using the coins I handed out, we had to count different amounts, then compare each amount to a dollar.  This, too, was added in our math notebook.  we will do more of those tomorrow.

The note I was telling you about came home today.  If your child doesn't returned it filled out, he or she will not be able to go next Monday.  It is also important to know that if your child can't behave, he or she will not be allowed to go. If we get there and they become difficult, you will be called and expected to pick them up, if necessary. I think we will be fine, but I feel you need to be aware of these things.

Class starts new chapter book

Well, it was great to be back in class.  I spent much of the break being sick.  I am still not at 100% but I am definitely better.

We started with some irregular plural practice.

We started a chapter book today.  Christmas in Camelot is from "The Magic Treehouse" series.  We read chapters 1-3 and summarized each.  We started with a prologue, so we had a discussion about what a prologue is. We also worked with vocabulary words from the first three chapters.

We wrote our spelling words in alphabetical order.

In math we worked with lines, rays, and line segments. They seem to enjoy this, which is nice.  They learn much quicker when they are interested in the subject!

An important note will be coming home tomorrow.  It is about our decorating a Christmas tree next Monday.
