Class takes first spelling test of 2023; most do well

We had a fabulous Friday! We took our first spelling test of 2023. Most did very well.

We also revisited our story and discussed its theme (teamwork).

We did some suffix practice with words, as well as reading sentences and marking a yes or a no box. It had them practicing fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. Ex. Have robins nested in a wastebasket? They would check the box underneath no.

We worked more with perimeter. Today we used feet, rather than units. I am trying to stress the importance of labeling. I told them there was a big difference in inches and feet.

They had time to read silently today, as well.

We took our timed multiplication practice pages, also.

Today in third: homonyms, perimeter, writing

We had another great day! We were able to continue our homonyms lesson. Yesterday we added a few examples to our notebooks. Today I wrote sentences leaving two spaces. They had to choose which homonym went into the spaces. Ex. I wasn’t sure if it was ______ when I saw a huge catfish on the end of my rod and _______! (real, reel)

We also introduced perimeter today in math. See if your child remembers the poem we used. Again, I modeled perimeter by walking around a rug and telling them I was walking the perimeter of the rug. They guessed what perimeter meant by that example. We added our information and our poem to our notebooks.

I am sending some graded papers home in their daily folders. This way, if someone needs to redo an assignment, they don’t have to wait until next Wednesday. Please check their daily folders, and go over their work with them.

A few finished their writing assignments for this week. They are getting so much better. At the beginning of the yer, I couldn’t hardly get them to write a sentence, much less multiple paragraphs. The describing words and details they are using now are much better, as well. I keep reminding them that when we think we are done, we have only just begun.

Students learn about graphs, multiplication, commas

We had a busy, busy day today! It seems the days are flying by!

We took a quiz over graphs today. Some had one or two to correct this evening. We will continue to work with them off and on. We also took our multiplication Glad Minute. We have someone on test “D” already. I send these home daily so that they may see the ones they missed., and they could practice. They should have their flash cards in their backpacks.

We worked with using commas in a series. By series, it means three or more words. (We went to Braum’s, Dillards, and Dollar Tree yesterday.) We also rediscussed how a comma tells us we need to pause.

We read aloud. We finished another “Lulu” book. She is a relatively new book character created by Judith Violist (Alexander and the Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day) Ask your child some questions about the book.

   Example Questions:

       What was your favorite part of the book?

       Tell me about the book.

       Do you think if Lulu were real you would want to be her friend? Why or why not?

When your child is through with his or her current reading log, he or she will have a different kind. The new one has stacks of books on it. An adult needs to initial one book if a single-sitting book is read. If it is a chapter book, then an adult needs to initial one book for every 25 pages.

Third graders begin to learn multiplication

We had a great couple of days. We are finishing up with graphs in math. We are also doing mini multiplication lessons. Your child brought home flash cards last week. They should be working on them nightly. Another good place to practice is when you are driving in the car. My children learned that way. They also used aplusmath.com. It is a free math site that works on facts only.

We are doing spelling this week and your child brought home their lists.

We read a book about teamwork. We also worked with our vocabulary.

We are working on what our favorite parts of the last year in our writers’ workshop. 

Book orders are due on the 19th.

Third graders learn about graphing

Today was a great day!

We worked more with graphs, and added line plots to our list. Again, we took the data we came up with as a class, and put it on a line plot. What was great, is that the students were able to explain how a line plot works just by seeing how I made it. So, rather than me explaining to them how they work, the students explained it. They also made a graph and had to write three things they knew, or observed, about the graph.

We took our reading ISIP test for January. We also finished our read aloud. 

We started a new writing project. The end product will be favorite experiences of 2022, but today we made individual lists in our journals about happy memories from last year.

Book orders came home and are due January 18.

Most students improve scores on math test

We had another very successful day in third grade.

We took our math Istation test, and most students improved upon their scores. We will take the reading tomorrow.

We worked on graphing today. We focused on horizontal and vertical bar graphs. We also used tally marks. We took information (data) and put it in multiple graphs.

We read today and retold stories. We also revisited summarization to show that in summarizing, you can decided what the main idea is. We were able to add 20 minutes to our reading logs. Please remind them to read at home, as well.

Students return to work in science, social studies and language arts

We had a wonderful first day for 2023! It was so nice seeing everyone!

We did a short lesson in science. Tomorrow we will try to make a model of some type of house that will keep whatever is inside, warm. We enjoy the mini lessons we get online.

We also read about directions, and how to find locations, in social studies.

We wrote today. There was no timer. They wrote until they felt they were done.

We read silently and aloud today.

We are not doing spelling this week, but will start it next week.

There will be a couple of things coming home tomorrow. No one sent home Wednesday folders today.
