Third graders now more confident about participating in class discussions

Third grade was busy today!  

We started with a place value picture, and I am happy to say we are doing much better with these.  The first several times, I had to guide and check them.  Today most were able to do these independently!

We did some silent reading today.  We also revisited nouns, but added common and proper into the mix.  We had a great lesson and discussion.  Getting children to give suggestions and participate in class discussion is a very important skill.  At first they find it difficult to participate, either due to shyness or just not sure how they should.  But today, I saw a breakthrough with several who have not participated before!  

We worked with Istation and making new numbers by either adding or subtracting 10 or 100.  Tomorrow if your child worked on Istation, he or she will work in a small group with me.

Class welcomes observer from ECU, makes foldable chart about presidents on Mt. Rushmore

We had a busy Tuesday.  We finished our math task cards for morning work today.

We had a visitor from ECU in Ada.  Miss Anna will be observing a couple of days a week.  

We read in small groups today.  We made a foldable chart about the four presidents on Mt. Rushmore, to go along with our story.  This is a great story to integrate social studies.  

We played Sparkle using our spelling words today.

In math we added to our notebook.  We also played and addition game in pairs.  Each person took turns rolling the dice, then added up the two.  Each person had the same amount of turns.  I will check them tonight and see which person had the most.  I will total up all of the sums for each person.

Some third graders struggle with motor skills

We had a marvelous Monday in third grade!

We started with some STEM bins and Play-Doh.  We were working on motor skills.  These are important so that they may hold a pencil so that they may write easier and neater. Many are struggling.  I think it is due partly to electronics.  These children have been swiping screens and pushing buttons since they were very young.  We are going to work on motor skills.

In reading we listened to this week's story.  It is about Mt. Rushmore other monuments.  We also went on Istation in computer lab.  

We worked with word meaning, using our spelling words.  Remember, we are using the words we introduced last week.  

In math we worked on simple math facts  using task cards.  There were some that had a regular problem. For example: 3 + 3 =?.  But some had pictures and they had to write the problem, as well as answer it.  One had two playing cards.  One had 8 diamonds on it and the other had 6.  So they had to write 8 + 6 = 14.
