Third graders have fun with alliteration

We had a wonderful, successful day.

We started with subtraction, but with a twist.  We were treasure hunters.  We had to solve the problems.  By the answer was either N,E,S, or W.  So if the answer was 5 and there was a W by the answer space, we had to move 5 spaces west on our paper.  They had fun.

We also continued our figurative language lessons with alliteration today.  Alliteration is used in tongue twisters.  In fact, a child made that observation as I was making up alliteration samples.  I get so excited when a child points out such things.  That is when you know he or she is "getting it."

We worked with plural nouns today, as well.

We worked with our spelling words today.  Their test is tomorrow.  They didn't have a test last week because I was gone.  I am picky about how my test is given.

We worked more with lines.  Today we added parallel and intersecting lines to our posters. They came home today.

From onomatopoeia to "super sentences': third graders have a great day of learning

We had a great day today, starting with a direction-following practice page.

We worked more with figurative language, focusing on onomatopoeia and personification, and revisiting similes.  They are getting pretty good at figuring these out.

We also wrote a super sentence.e  We started with "The dog ran." It is a perfect, but boring, sentence.  So we made columns with other choices.  One column was "What Kind" (adjectives), another was "Who or What?" (subject), another was "did what?" (verbs), and then we had a "When" and "Where" column.  They had to choose a word or phrase from each to come up with a super sentence.

We also got some Istation time this afternoon.  We worked on reading, math, and a little bit of Prodigy.

I hope everyone has a great evening!

Students work with similes and metaphors

We had a great day in third grade today.  It was good to be back.

We worked a lot with figurative language today.  We introduced metaphors and filled out our notebooks that we made.  We had fun making up our own, and guessing what each one meant.  We also compared them to similes, and discussed the differences.   We also discussed what they had in common, such as being comparisons.

We also worked with lines, rays, and line segments.  Have your child tell you about each one.  We made our own out of sticks and pom poms.  We also came up with definitions.

We read our next newspaper in social studies.  We enjoy reading about our state.

Class begins reading classic Thanksgiving-themed book

I will be back tomorrow from Washington state.  I had a funeral to attend.

We started with some more practice of following directions.

We read Molly's Pilgrim.  This is tonight's reading assignment.  Before reading, each child drew a pilgrim, or pilgrim family. Then we read our book.

We then worked with some short passages.  We read them and answered a few questions about each one.  Every answer was easily found in the passage.  We practiced multiple reading skills with this.

Spelling words came home today.

We tried several different third grade math skills today.  They were to do their best.  I will look at them to see which skills I need to work on the most.  Monday is our regular Istation day, so we were able to go.

We played Bingo using sight and frequently used words.
